The Karoo, slowly: four days from Graaff-Reinet to Prince Albert
A solo road trip through big skies and small dorps — where I stayed, what I spent and why I'll never rush the R407 again.

Sample story. This post shows how a story looks on the blog. Replace it with your own, or delete it in the editor.
There’s a particular quiet you only find in the Karoo. Not silence, exactly — there’s always a windpomp creaking somewhere — but a quiet that makes you drive slower and notice more.
Day one: Graaff-Reinet
I arrived mid-afternoon with a flask of rooibos and a bag of biltong that didn’t survive the Valley of Desolation viewpoint. Go up an hour before sunset; take a jersey.
Where I stayed
| Night | Town | Type | Approx. cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | Graaff-Reinet | Guesthouse | R950 pp |
| 3 | Nieu-Bethesda | Self-catering cottage | R700 |
| 4 | Prince Albert | Farm stay | R1,100 |
What I’d tell a friend
- Fill up at every town. The gaps are longer than they look on the map.
- Pack padkos you actually want to eat. Roosterkoek from a farm stall beats anything in a garage.
- Travelling solo here felt safe and friendly — people stop to chat.
- Planning a park visit? Check gate times on the SANParks website first.
