Seven days, three grandchildren aged five to eleven, and a minibus that smelt faintly of naartjies by day two. Here’s how we kept everyone happy.

Walks for little legs

The short trail to the waterfall took us ninety minutes there and back, with plenty of stops for frogs. Start early before the afternoon thunderstorms roll in.

Rainy-day rescues

  1. The chocolate factory down the road — worth the sugar rush.
  2. A bird-of-prey show the kids still talk about.
  3. A big puzzle and a pot of hot chocolate. Never underestimate it.
